چکیده

We report high-resolution millimeter mapping with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer of rest-frame 335μm continuum and CO(3–2) line emission from the z = 2.8 submillimeter galaxy SMMJ02399-0136. The continuum emission comes from a ∼ 3 diameter structure whose elongation is approximately east-west and whose centroid is coincident within the astrometric errors with the brightest X-ray and rest-UV peak (L1). The line data show that this structure is most likely a rapidly rotating disk. Its rotation velocity of ≥ 420 km s implies a total dynamical mass of ≥ 3× 10 sin i h 0.7M⊙ within an intrinsic radius of 8 h 0.7 kpc, most of which is plausibly in the form of stars and gas. SMMJ023990136 is thus a very massive system, whose formation at z ∼ 3 is not easy to understand in current CDM hierarchical merger cosmogonies. Subject headings: galaxies: formation, kinematics and dynamics, active, starburst; cosmology: observations

We report the detection of CO(3!2) emission from the submillimeter{selected hyperluminous galaxy SMM 02399{0136. This galaxy is the brightest source detected in the recent SCUBA surveys of the submillimeter sky. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identiied as a narrow-line AGN/starburst galaxy at z = 2:8. The CO emission is unresolved, < 5 00 , and is coincident in red...

Investigating the nature of the z ≃ 2 . 8 submillimeter selected galaxy SMM J 02399 − 0136 with VLT spectropolarimetry ⋆

We present deep optical spectropolarimety of SMM J02399−0136 (z = 2.8) done with the VLT Antu 8.2 m telescope equipped with FORS1. Moderate continuum and emission line polarization are measured (P ∼5%). We do not detect broad lines in scattered flux as would be expected for a type-2 object but rather a polarization behaviour similar to BAL quasars. This classification is confirmed by the detect...

The contribution of very massive high-redshift SWIRE galaxies to the stellar mass function

Context. In the last couple of years a population of very massive (M > 1011 M ), high-redshift (z ≥ 2) galaxies has been identified, but its role in galaxy evolution has not yet been fully understood. Aims. It is necessary to perform a systematic study of high-redshift massive galaxies, in order to determine the shape of the very massive tail of the stellar mass function and determine the epoch...
